What is Economics?

Economics is a social science that examines how individuals, societies, businesses, and governments make choices regarding the allocation of scarce resources to satisfy their unlimited wants. At its core, economics is concerned with the problems of scarcity and choice—it explores how limited resources can be used efficiently to achieve maximum output and utility.

In the 18th century, Adam Smith, often called the Father of Economics, provided a broader definition in his seminal work "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations" (1776). He defined economics as the study of wealth generation and its distribution.
