Padma Bhushan - India's third highest civilian award. Established on 2 January 1954, this award is given for any outstanding service. It is given by the President of India on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.

The first Padma Bhushan awards were given in 1954 to Maithili Sharan Gupta (literature and education), R.R. Handa (public service), Amar Nath Jha (literature and education) and Ayodhya Nath Khosla (science and engineering).
