The objective of sports is to utilize an individual's talent and energy positively through games and physical education, and to instill feelings of nationalism, friendship, social harmony, and camaraderie through adventurous activities.

स्वतंत्रता पूर्व वर्ष 1888 में वायसराय लॉर्ड डफरिन द्वारा सतना जिले में लॉन टेनिस कोर्ट का निर्माण करवाया गया था। जहां वर्ष 1928 में इंदौर के होल्कर राजाओं द्वारा राज्य के विद्यालयों में शारीरिक शिक्षा को अनिवार्य कर दिया गया तथा कई खेल मैदानों का भी निर्माण करवाया गया।
Before independence, in 1888, Viceroy Lord Dufferin had a lawn tennis court constructed in the Satna district. Later, in 1928, the Holkar rulers of Indore made physical education compulsory in state schools and also had several sports grounds built.
राज्य पुनर्गठन के पूर्व इंदौर, ग्वालियर, सागर तथा भोपाल खेलों के प्रमुख केन्द्र थे।
Before the reorganization of the state, Indore, Gwalior, Sagar, and Bhopal were major centers for sports.
प्रदेश में खेल कार्यक्रमों के विकास एवं खिलाडि़यों को उनकी प्रतिभाओं को निखारने के लिए समुचित अवसर प्रदान करने के उद्देशय से 1 अक्टूबर 1975 को राज्य खेलकूद एवं युवक कल्याण विभाग का गठन किया गया जिसे परिवर्तित कर 30 जून 1981 को खेल एवं कल्याण विभाग कर दिया गया।
With the objective of developing sports programs in the state and providing adequate opportunities to players to hone their talents, the State Sports and Youth Welfare Department was constituted on October 1, 1975, which was later transformed into the Sports and Welfare Department on June 30, 1981.
