The transition from silent films to talking cinema marked a watershed moment in the history of Indian filmmaking. This new era began with the release of Alam Ara in 1931, a film that would go on to redefine the cinematic experience for Indian audiences.

Alam Ara – The First Indian Talkie

आलम आरा - पहली भारतीय बोलती फिल्म

Directed by Ardeshir Irani and produced by the Imperial Film Company, Alam Ara premiered at Majestic Cinema in Bombay (Mumbai). It holds the distinction of being India’s first full-length sound film. With this single release, the era of silent films effectively came to a close.

W.M. Khan, India’s first playback singer, sang several songs for the film, including the historic "De De Khuda Ke Naam Par", which became the first song ever recorded and featured in Indian cinematic history. The film's success was so overwhelming that it set the course for the future of Indian cinema, where music would play a central role.
