यह आन्दोलन नर्मदा नदी पर निर्मित किए जा रहे बांधों एवं उनके निर्माण स्थल से लोगों के विस्थापन को रोकने के लिए वर्ष 1985 में प्रारम्भ किया गया था। 4 सितंबर, 1989 में हरसूद (खण्डवा) में 200 से अधिक गैर सरकारी संगठनों के लगभग 50 हजार लोगों की सहभागिता ने इस आन्दोलन का राष्ट्रीय विस्तार किया। नर्मदा संरक्षण के मूल उद्देशय से प्रेरित इस जन आंदोलन को समाज सेविका मेधा पाटकर ने नेतृत्व प्रदान किया तथा अरूण पटेल अरून्धती रॉय , बाबा आम्टे, शबानी आजमी, सुन्दरलाल बहुगुणा आदि ने आन्दोलन के विकास एवं विस्तार में सक्रिय योगदान दिया।
This movement was launched in 1985 to oppose the construction of dams on the Narmada River and the displacement of people from the construction sites. On September 4, 1989, the participation of approximately 50,000 people from over 200 non-governmental organizations in Harsud (Khandwa) gave this movement a national dimension. Inspired by the core objective of protecting the Narmada River, this mass movement was led by social activist Medha Patkar, while Arun Patel, Arundhati Roy, Baba Amte, Shabana Azmi, Sunderlal Bahuguna, and others actively contributed to its growth and expansion.
