It is the largest port on the Bay of Bengal and the second largest port in India after Jawaharlal Nehru Port. It is the largest port on the east coast. This port is also known as Madras Port. It is an artificial port. It was opened in 1881 which makes it the third oldest port in India. Chennai Port imports coal, petroleum, metals, machinery, timber, paper, motor-cycles, chemicals, rice and food grains, long staple cotton, chemicals etc. Chennai Port mainly exports groundnut and its oil, tobacco, onion, coffee, mica, manganese, tea, spices, oilseeds, leather, coconut etc.
