1. 1917 – Champaran Satyagraha

·       Mahatma Gandhi’s first satyagraha or movement began in Bihar. It was a peasant movement. The British, to free the farmers from the indigo contracts, increased the rent and imposed illegal taxes excessively. To end this exploitation, in 1917, activist Rajkumar Shukla invited Gandhi to Champaran, Bihar.
