The state of Maharashtra has officially declared Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav as a state festival in 2025
Ganesh Utsav was started by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
Year: 1893
· Location: Pune, Maharashtra
· Objective: At that time there was British rule in India, and it was difficult to unite people and inspire them for the freedom struggle as there were restrictions on public gathering.
· Lokmanya Tilak worked to unite people by making Ganesh Utsav a public festival
· Why was Ganesh Utsav chosen?
· Ganapati Bappa is considered "Vighnaharta" (remover of obstacles) and "Sarvpratham Pujya".
· This festival was already celebrated traditionally in homes, but Tilak gave it the form of a public and social movement. Since then, this festival is celebrated with great pomp all over India including Maharashtra.
