What is the environment?
पर्यावरण दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना है:
The word environment is made up of two words:
परि = चारों ओर
आवरण = घेरने वाला / ढकने वाला
अर्थात् जो हमें चारों ओर से घेरे हुए है, वही पर्यावरण है।
In other words, everything that surrounds us is the environment.
पर्यावरण से आशय उन सभी जीवित और अजीव तत्वों के समुच्चय से है जो किसी जीव के जीवन, विकास और अस्तित्व को प्रत्यक्ष या अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से प्रभावित करते हैं। मनुष्य, पशु, पौधे, सूक्ष्मजीव तथा जल, वायु, भूमि, तापमान, प्रकाशसभी मिलकर पर्यावरण का निर्माण करते हैं।
The environment refers to the sum total of all living and non-living elements that directly or indirectly influence the life, growth, and survival of an organism. Humans, animals, plants, microorganisms, as well as water, air, land, temperature, and light—all together constitute the environment.
सरल शब्दों में, / In simple words,
“जीव और उसके चारों ओर मौजूद सभी प्राकृतिक व मानव-निर्मित परिस्थितियों का समुच्चय ही पर्यावरण है।”
"The environment is the sum total of all living organisms and all the natural and man-made conditions that surround them."
पर्यावरण की परिभाषाएँ / Definitions of the environment
ई. पी. ओडम के अनुसार –
“पर्यावरण वह बाहरी शक्ति है जो किसी जीव को प्रभावित करती है।”
"The environment is the external force that affects an organism."
यूनेस्को के अनुसार –
“पर्यावरण वे सभी जैविक, भौतिक एवं सामाजिक कारक हैं जो मानव जीवन को प्रभावित करते हैं।”
"The environment comprises all the biological, physical, and social factors that influence human life."
पर्यावरण' शब्द का पहला लिखित प्रयोग 1600 के दशक की शुरुआत में मिलता है, लेकिन इसका आधुनिक अर्थ (जिसमें परिस्थितियाँ शामिल हैं) 1827 में थॉमस कार्लाइल ने जर्मन शब्द 'Umgebung' के अनुवाद के रूप में किया, और पारिस्थितिकी के विशिष्ट अर्थ में 1956 में पहली बार प्रयोग हुआ, जबकि हिन्दी में संस्कृत के 'परि + आवरण' से बना यह शब्द सदियों से प्रचलित है।
The word 'environment' was first used in writing in the early 1600s, but its modern meaning (including surrounding conditions) was introduced in 1827 by Thomas Carlyle as a translation of the German word 'Umgebung', and its specific ecological meaning was first used in 1956. In Hindi, however, this word, derived from the Sanskrit 'pari + āvaraṇa', has been in use for centuries.
पर्यावरण के घटक (Components of Environment)
पर्यावरण को मुख्यतः दो भागों में बाँटा जाता है:
The environment is mainly divided into two parts:
1. जैविक घटक / Biological components
ये वे घटक हैं जिनमें जीवन होता है:
These are the components that contain life:
उत्पादक – पौधे, शैवाल / Producers – plants, algae
उपभोक्ता – मनुष्य, पशु / Consumer – human, animal
अपघटक – बैक्टीरिया, फंगस / Decomposers – bacteria, fungi
ये सभी मिलकर खाद्य श्रृंखला बनाते हैं।
All of these together form a food chain.
2. अजैविक घटक / Abiotic Components
ये निर्जीव तत्व हैं: / These non-living elements are:
वायु / Air
जल / Water
मृदा (मिट्टी) / Soil
तापमान / Temperature
सूर्य का प्रकाश / Sunlight
खनिज / Minerals
ये जीवन के लिए आधार प्रदान करते हैं।
These provide the foundation for life.
पर्यावरण के प्रमुख मंडल (Spheres of Environment)
पर्यावरण को चार मंडलों में वर्गीकृत किया जाता है:
The environment is classified into four spheres:
1. वायुमंडल (Atmosphere)
पृथ्वी को घेरे गैसों की परत
Layer of gases surrounding the Earth
जीवन रक्षक गैसें: ऑक्सीजन, नाइट्रोजन
Life-saving gases: oxygen, nitrogen
मौसम एवं जलवायु को नियंत्रित करता है
It controls the weather and climate.
2. जलमंडल (Hydrosphere)
महासागर, नदियाँ, झीलें, हिमनद, भूजल
Oceans, rivers, lakes, glaciers, groundwater
पृथ्वी का लगभग 71% भाग जल से ढका है
Approximately 71% of the Earth's surface is covered with water.
3. स्थलमंडल (Lithosphere)
पृथ्वी की ऊपरी कठोर परत
Earth's upper hard layer
भूमि, पर्वत, पठार, मैदान, खनिज संसाधन
Land, mountains, plateaus, plains, mineral resources
4. जीवमंडल (Biosphere)
वह क्षेत्र जहाँ जीवन संभव है

1. प्राकृतिक पर्यावरण / Natural Environment
वन, नदियाँ, पर्वत, समुद्र / Forests, rivers, mountains, seas
मानव हस्तक्षेप न्यूनतम / Minimal human intervention
2. मानव-निर्मित पर्यावरण / Man-made environment
शहर, सड़कें, उद्योग, बांध / Cities, roads, industries, dams
3. सामाजिक पर्यावरण / Social environment
संस्कृति, परंपरा, संस्थाएँ, समाज / Culture, traditions, institutions, society

The concept of the ecosystem has developed gradually.
ईथोलॉजी / Ethology
सर्वप्रथम फ्रांस जंतु शास्त्रवेत्ता, सेंट हिलेयर ने 1859 में यातिस्थितिकीय के लिए इथोलाजी शब्द प्रयुक्त किया था जिसका अर्थ होता है विभिन्न जीवों के आपसी जीवन का अध्ययन।
Firstly, the French zoologist Saint-Hilaire used the term ethology in 1859 for ethological studies, which means the study of the social life of various organisms.
हेक्सीकोलॉजी / Hexicology
हेक्सीकोलॉजी शब्द का प्रयोग जैक्चन मिवार्ड ने किया था. इसका अर्थ जीव तथा उसके भौतिक पर्यावरण के संबंधों का अध्ययन है।
The term hexicology was coined by Jackson Mivart. It refers to the study of the relationships between an organism and its physical environment.
इकोलॉजी" शब्द का परिचय (1866): जर्मन जीवविज्ञानी अर्नस्ट हेकेल (Ernst Haeckel) ने "इकोलॉजी" (Ökologie) शब्द गढ़ा। यह शब्द ग्रीक शब्द 'ओइकोस' (Oikos, जिसका अर्थ 'घर' या 'रहने का स्थान' है) और 'लोगोस' (Logos, जिसका अर्थ 'अध्ययन' है) से बना है। हेकेल ने इसे जीवों के उनके पर्यावरण के साथ संबंधों के अध्ययन के रूप में परिभाषित किया।
Introduction of the term "ecology" (1866): The German biologist Ernst Haeckel coined the term "ecology" (Ökologie). The word is derived from the Greek words 'oikos' (meaning 'house' or 'dwelling place') and 'logos' (meaning 'study'). Haeckel defined it as the study of the relationships of organisms with their environment.
"बायोसिनोसिस" और "बायोटॉप" की अवधारणा (1877): जर्मन वैज्ञानिक कार्ल मोबियस ने "बायोसिनोसिस" (Biocoenosis - जैविक समुदाय) शब्द का उपयोग एक विशेष निवास स्थान में एक साथ रहने वाले जीवों के समुदाय का वर्णन करने के लिए किया। उन्होंने "बायोटॉप" (Biotop) शब्द भी पेश किया, जिसका अर्थ उस समुदाय का भौतिक वातावरण था।
The concepts of "biocoenosis" and "biotope" (1877): The German scientist Karl Möbius used the term "biocoenosis" (biological community) to describe the community of organisms living together in a particular habitat. He also introduced the term "biotope," which referred to the physical environment of that community.
"इकोसिस्टम" शब्द का औपचारिक उपयोग (1935)
The formal use of the term "ecosystem" (1935)
ब्रिटिश पारिस्थितिकीविद् आर्थर टैन्सले ने 1935 में प्रकाशित अपने एक शोधपत्र में पहली बार "इकोसिस्टम" (Ecosystem - पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र) शब्द का औपचारिक रूप से उपयोग किया। उन्होंने पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र को एक विशिष्ट क्षेत्र के सभी जीवों (जैविक समुदाय) और भौतिक वातावरण (अजैविक घटक) के रूप में परिभाषित किया, जो एक प्रणाली के रूप में परस्पर क्रिया करते हैं।
British ecologist Arthur Tansley first formally used the term "ecosystem" in a research paper published in 1935. He defined an ecosystem as all the organisms (biotic community) and the physical environment (abiotic components) of a particular area, interacting as a system.
पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र ऊर्जा प्रवाह का अध्ययन (1942): अमेरिकी पारिस्थितिकीविद् रेमंड लिंडेमैन ने 1942 में अपने महत्वपूर्ण शोधपत्र में पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र में ऊर्जा प्रवाह और पोषण स्तरों की अवधारणा प्रस्तुत की उनके कार्य ने पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र को एक गतिशील और ऊर्जा-स्थानांतरण प्रणाली के रूप में स्थापित किया।
Study of Ecosystem Energy Flow (1942): In his seminal paper in 1942, American ecologist Raymond Lindeman introduced the concept of energy flow and trophic levels in ecosystems. His work established the ecosystem as a dynamic and energy-transferring system.
इन विभिन्न चरणों के माध्यम से, प्रकृति के अध्ययन का फोकस व्यक्तिगत प्रजातियों या समुदायों से हटकर एक एकीकृत, कार्यात्मक प्रणाली (पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र) के अध्ययन पर केंद्रित हो गया।
Through these various stages, the focus of the study of nature shifted from individual species or communities to the study of an integrated, functional system (ecosystem).
