1. In response to his party’s heavy loss in the European Parliamentary elections, French President Emmanuel Macron has dissolved the National Assembly and called for snap parliamentary elections. The far-right Rassemblement National (RN) secured a significant victory, winning 31.5% of the vote compared to Macron’s Renaissance Party’s 15.2%. Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly in an hour-long national address, citing the need to restore trust in the French electoral process.
2. The Indian delegation, headed by Secretary of Labour and Employment, Ms. Sumita Dawra, took part in the 112th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland.
3. In a strategic effort to expand its lending capabilities, the State Bank of India (SBI) has partnered with 23 non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) and housing finance companies (HFCs). This collaboration has resulted in the sanctioning of loans amounting to ₹2,030 crore to more than 2.79 lakh borrowers, as detailed in SBI’s most recent annual report.
4. The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will host 20 teams, which are divided into four groups of five each. From these groups, the top two teams will progress to the Super Eight stage. In the Super Eight, the qualifying teams will be split into two groups of four. The leading two teams from each of these groups will then advance to the semi-finals. The tournament will culminate in a final match where the champion will be determined.
5. The Indian Army has launched a tech-based innovation called 'Vidyut Rakshak', an integrated generator monitoring, protection, and control system. This system was developed by the Army Design Bureau (ADB) and was launched by the Army's Vice Chief, Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, on June 5.
6. Indian Revenue Service officer Inder Pal Singh Bindra has been appointed as the Secretary of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), replacing Anupama Anand, who resigned after serving for eight months. Bindra, an IRS officer, will serve a three-year term as CCI Secretary on deputation basis.
7. The Bank of India has strengthened its foothold in GIFT City's International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) by acquiring a 6.125% stake in the Clearing Corporation of India Ltd. (IFSC) for ₹6.125 crore. This strategic move demonstrates the bank's dedication to fostering the growth of GIFT City as a premier global financial hub.
