1. Oxford University’s Ashmolean Museum has resolved to return a 16th-century bronze sculpture of Saint Tirumankai Alvar to India. This decision follows a formal request from the Indian government. The 60cm-tall statue, which is thought to have been stolen from a temple in Tamil Nadu, was obtained by the museum in 1967 through an acquisition from Sotheby’s auction house. The museum made this decision after an independent researcher brought the statue’s origins to their attention, leading them to inform the Indian High Commission.

 

2. Puja Tomar made history by becoming the first Indian to win a fight in the UFC. She achieved this milestone by defeating Brazil’s Rayanne Amanda dos Santos through a split decision at UFC Louisville on June 8. The judges scored the match in Tomar's favor with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28.

 

3. The eighth edition of the Japan-India Maritime Exercise, JIMEX 24, has begun in Yokosuka, Japan, with the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) as the host. The Indian Navy's INS Shivalik and Japan's JS Yugiri are participating in the exercise.

 

4. In a significant political development, N. Chandrababu Naidu has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for the fourth time, three years after pledging to enter the Assembly only as the state's top executive. The oath-taking ceremony, which took place near Gannavaram Airport in Kesarapalli on the outskirts of Vijayawada, was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. 

 

5. The Uttar Pradesh government has revealed its plans to host the prestigious MotoGP event in Noida, with the city set to stage the race from 2025 to 2029. As part of this initiative, the state government has forged a partnership with Spain-based Dorna Sports and Indian partner Fairstreet Sports. Initially scheduled to take place in 2024, the event was postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions and is now slated to debut in March 2025.

 

6. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken proactive steps to mitigate the growing risks of payment frauds and improve operational efficiencies in the banking sector.

 

7. GAIL (India) is set to establish a massive 1500 KTA Ethane Cracker Project in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh, with a staggering investment of Rs 60,000 crore. This project will produce a diverse range of ethylene derivatives, significantly enhancing the petrochemical infrastructure in the region.
