1. Russia and Belarus have launched the second phase of joint military exercises centered on tactical nuclear weapons. These drills aim to enhance their readiness and serve as a deterrent against Western support for Ukraine. Moscow initiated these exercises in reaction to what it perceives as provocations from Western officials, highlighting the Kremlin's strategic position amid escalating tensions.

 

2. Prem Prabhakar has been appointed as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SBICAP Ventures Limited (SVL), starting from June 4, 2024. Prabhakar brings over 24 years of extensive experience in the banking sector to his new role at SVL, having previously served in senior positions at State Bank of India (SBI), including General Manager and Chief Dealer. His deep knowledge of treasury operations and strategic leadership is expected to drive SVL's growth and strengthen its relationships with investors.

 

3. In a landmark political shift, Odisha has seen Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated as its first BJP Chief Minister at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar. This event signifies the conclusion of the Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD) 24-year rule, heralding a new chapter of governance under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 

4. Indian universities and higher education institutions (HEIs) will soon be able to admit students twice a year, similar to the practice at international universities. Starting from the 2024-25 academic session, the two admission periods will be July-August and January-February.

 

5. In a notable step toward inclusive governance, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has announced his new 24-member Cabinet following the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and its allies' decisive victory in the state elections. The Cabinet includes representatives from various communities and regions, highlighting the government's dedication to meeting the diverse needs of the state..

 

6. To mark its fourth anniversary, the National Commission for Indian Medical Systems held a two-day National Conference titled ‘PRANA’ (Protecting Rights and Novelties in ASUS: Mind to Market for Indian System of Medicines [ISM] Professionals). The event was organized in collaboration with the All India Council for Technical Education and the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell.

 

7. India and the UAE have launched an innovative Local Currency Settlement System (LCSS) to transform their economic relations. This new system enables transactions between the two countries to be conducted in their respective domestic currencies—Indian Rupees and UAE Dirhams—eliminating the need for intermediary currencies like the US Dollar. The LCSS is expected to substantially reduce transaction costs and settlement times, creating a more streamlined and efficient trade environment.
