Exam Rewards presents you with daily current affairs updates that are invaluable for all your exam preparations. Today’s highlights include:
1. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has introduced the "Safai Apnao, Bimaari Bhagao" (Cleanliness is Ours, Let's Eradicate Disease) initiative as part of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, which will run from July 1 to August 31, 2024. This campaign aims to empower Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to tackle the increased challenges of maintaining cleanliness and public health during the monsoon season. In line with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's "STOP Diarrhoea Campaign", this initiative focuses on implementing comprehensive solutions and fostering inter-departmental collaboration to achieve its goals.
2. In a groundbreaking development, the Ministry of Coal has launched India's first-ever pilot project for underground coal gasification in Jharkhand's Jamtara District. The pioneering initiative, undertaken by Eastern Coalfields Limited at the Kasta coal block, is poised to transform the coal industry landscape. By leveraging an innovative in-situ process, coal will be converted into valuable gases such as methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide without the need for extraction. These gases can then be harnessed to produce synthetic natural gas, chemical feedstocks, and other products, holding immense potential to reshape India's energy sector.
3. In a significant development for Indian democracy, Om Birla has been re-elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha, marking a notable milestone in India's parliamentary history. This achievement underscores the resilience and strength of our democratic institutions.
4. Under the leadership of Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara, the State Bank of India (SBI) has set an ambitious target to establish 400 new branches across the country in the 2024-25 fiscal year. This strategic expansion is designed to bolster customer service, with a focus on emerging opportunities in wealth management and advisory services, even as the banking sector continues to shift towards digital channels.
5. Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana achieved a remarkable feat on June 19, becoming the first woman from her country to score back-to-back centuries in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) during the second match against South Africa at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium. She continued to make her mark on the series, setting a new record for the highest aggregate runs by an Indian woman in a bilateral ODI series on June 23.
6. The 64th International Sugar Organisation (ISO) Council meeting kicked off on June 25, 2024, at New Delhi's Bharat Mandapam, attracting a diverse gathering of delegates from more than 30 nations and representatives from various global organizations. Spanning three days from June 25 to 27, 2024, the meeting seeks to tackle pressing concerns and opportunities in the sugar industry and biofuels sectors.
7. In a significant development, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief and Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda has been appointed as the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha. This move comes after Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who previously held the position, was elected to the Lok Sabha and took oath as a member of the Lower House of Parliament on June 24, vacating the role.
