भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के इतिहास में कई ऐसे वीर घटनाएँ घटित हुईं जिन्होंने ब्रिटिश हुकूमत को हिला कर रख दिया। इन्हीं में से एक महत्वपूर्ण घटना पंजाब मेल हत्याकांड थी, जो 23-24 जुलाई, 1931 को मध्य प्रदेश के खंडवा रेलवे स्टेशन पर हुई थी।

Background of the Punjab Mail murder case
ब्रिटिश सरकार की दमनकारी नीतियों के विरोध में स्वतंत्रता संग्राम सेनानियों ने विभिन्न क्रांतिकारी कदम उठाए। इसी क्रम में, वीर यशवंत सिंह (दमोह), देवनारायण तिवारी और दलपत राव ने खंडवा रेलवे स्टेशन पर ब्रिटिश अधिकारी हैक्सल पर हमला किया और उसकी हत्या कर दी।
Freedom fighters took various revolutionary steps to protest the oppressive policies of the British government. In this sequence, Veer Yashwant Singh (Damoh), Devnarayan Tiwari, and Dalpat Rao attacked and killed the British officer Haxall at Khandwa railway station.

Trial and sentencing
इस घटना के बाद ब्रिटिश सरकार ने इन क्रांतिकारियों के खिलाफ कड़ी कार्रवाई की। 10 अगस्त, 1931 को खंडवा अदालत में इन पर मुकदमा चलाया गया। न्यायालय के फैसले के अनुसारः यशवंत सिंह और देवनारायण तिवारी को 11 दिसंबर, 1931 को फाँसी की सजा दी गई। दलपत राव को काला पानी (आजन्म कारावास) की सजा सुनाई गई।
Following this incident, the British government took strict action against these revolutionaries. They were tried in a Khandwa court on August 10, 1931. According to the court's verdict: Yashwant Singh and Devnarayan Tiwari were sentenced to death on December 11, 1931. Dalpat Rao was sentenced to Kala Pani (life imprisonment).
