It is the second largest ocean, covering about one-third of the Earth's surface. It is located between the Americas to the west and Europe and Africa to the east, separating South America from Europe. It is characterized by its five-sided basin and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a system of underwater mountains. It covers about 20 percent of the Earth's surface and 29 percent of its water surface area.
