वर्ष 1934 में कांग्रेस के बहुत बड़े भाग ने कांग्रेस के भीतर समाजवादी विचारधारा का प्रचार-प्रसार करने के लिये एक पृथक् दल के गठन पर बल दिया। इसी उद्देश्य से जय प्रकाश नारायण, आचार्य नरेंद्र देव तथा मीनू मसानी ने मिलकर 'बंबई में कॉन्ग्रेस समाजवादी दल' की स्थापना की। इसके अन्य सहयोगी नेता अशोक मेहता, अच्युत पटवर्धन, डॉ. राम मनोहर लोहिया आदि थे।

In 1934, a significant section of the Congress party advocated for the formation of a separate group within the Congress to promote socialist ideology. With this objective, Jayaprakash Narayan, Acharya Narendra Dev, and Minoo Masani together founded the Congress Socialist Party in Bombay. Other prominent leaders associated with this group included Ashok Mehta, Achyut Patwardhan, and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia.

1936 में कांग्रेस के लखनऊ अधिवेशन में समाजवाद का लक्ष्य, विश्व में फासीवाद तथा प्रतिक्रियावाद के विरुद्ध रहते हुए संघर्ष के परिप्रेक्ष्य में भारतीय संघर्ष को केंद्रित रखने का रखा गया।

 At the Congress session in Lucknow in 1936, the goal of socialism was adopted, with the aim of focusing the Indian struggle within the context of the fight against fascism and reaction in the world.

 नेहरू का यह प्रस्ताव कांग्रेस कार्यकारिणी समिति में अस्वीकृत हो गया।

Nehru's proposal was rejected by the Congress Working Committee.
